Remembering Floyd McKissick

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall believes in promoting and supporting the community in which it works. The dealership wants all of Durham and its citizens to prosper and succeeed.

Knowing that success and achievement can be hard to maintain, the dealership likes to recognize those of its community who have made a positive impact and inspired others with their achievements.

So, today, the dealership recognizes and celebrates the significant contributions of Floyd McKissick, Sr.

McKissick, a longtime resident of Durham before he died in 1991, was perhaps best known as the first African-American student at the UNC-Chapel Hill Law School. He started his own law firm in Durham in 1955

McKissick's greatest impact may have come during his time with CORE - the Congress for Racial Equality. It was on this date 49 years ago - Jan. 3, 1966 - that he became the leader of CORE. Shortly after that, McKissick joined with Martn Luther King, Jr., amd Stokely Carmichael in leading a group of civil-rights demonstrators on a 194-mile walk from Memphis, Tenn., to Jackson, Mississipi.

The father of politician and attorney Floyd McKissick, Jr., McKissick died of lung cancer at the age of 69 on April 28, 1991.
