According to an article in the Detroit News, the Chevrolet brand of automobile hit an all-time sales record in the third quarter of 2011.

The iconic American brand from General Motors - which features a Suburban SUV that pre-dates the popular Krispy Kreme doughnut - sold 1.2 million vehicles globally, the company announced this week.

Many Chevrolets have been sold at the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, which has delivered a healthy number of Corvettes, Cruzes and Silverado trucks among other Chevys in its inventory.

The Durham dealership also has the new 2012 Volt, Chevy's all-electric car, as well as the 45th anniversary Camaro and all-new 2012 Sonic.

Members of a group known as Friends of the Mountain-to-Sea Trail got an exclusive showing of the vehicle prior to a weekend workday near the Eno River. Many were impressed with not only the technology but also the quality and standard features on the vehicle.

The Volt is completely powered by electricity, which caught some in the group by surprise. Knowing that the vehicle can be equipped with a navigation system, XM radio and remote-start capability also added to the excitement.

Furthermore, there is a phone application available that allows you to start the car and perform diagnostic checks on the car from your phone.

The vehicle has an extended range of nearly 400 miles. It can be charged overnight in as little as four hours.

Offering additional support to the community, Durham Firebirds will have the opportunity to raise as much as $10,000 through a fundraising campaign in which someone will win a new 2012 Buick or GMC vehicle (MSRP not to exceed $29,000).

September is an exciting month.

Schools are back in session.

Football season has begun.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup season is entering its championship stretch.

Perhaps most exciting of all, there are sales aplenty at the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall.

Hendrick Motorsports drivers Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., helped build the excitement at the Durham dealership. Gordon and Johnson posted significant finishes in Tuesday's race in Atlanta, and Earnhardt recently provided a music grant to a Durham middle school th4rough his Dale Jr. Foundation.

Junior, NASCAR's eight-time Most Popular Driver, has a lifelong passion for music and a broad taste for its many variations.

Through the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, the Dale Jr. Foundation provided a $30,000 grant to Neal Middle School in Durham to enhance its music program and give its students the opportunity to excel musically.

The band program at Neal was cut completely last year due to lack of instruments and funding. With the new grant, the school not only will be able to restart its band program but also institute and support a school-wide music education initiative.

At Atlanta Motor Speedway on Tuesday, Gordon won his 85th career race to become NASCAR's third-winningest driver. He led much of the rain-delayed AdvoCare 500 and then won a duel with Johnson for his third Sprint Cup victory of the season.

By virtue of his runner-up finish, Johnson took over the season points lead. With one event remaining until the 10-race Chase for the Cup, Johnson, the five-time reigning champion, has a 21-point lead over Kyle Busch.

Gordon held about a 2-second lead with 20 laps remaining. Johnson, who rallied from early struggles, closed on Gordon's bumper with 11 laps remaining. He tried repeatedly to get by his teammate over the final 10 laps, to no avail.

The musical grant awarded to Neal Middle School could have been as exciting a moment for the Durham community as Tuesday's race.

"Anyone who knows me knows music is a big part of my life," Earnhardt, Jr., said. "I've always admired artists who can express themselves and connect with people musically. I really believe in . . . giving kids across the country the opportunity to develop their talents and learn how to express themselves while receiving a complete education that includes music."

Emily Mueller, coordinator for The Dale Jr. Foundation, said: "It is important that we support programs that are aligned with Dale Jr.'s interests, which is why we put such an emphasis on schools and kids in the local communities. Locating a school in North Carolina to award the $30,000 grant to is an extreme privilege."

Junior Signs Extension With Hendrick Motorsports

Hendrick Motorsports and driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. have agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep Earnhardt behind the wheel of the No. 88 Chevrolet through the end of the 2017 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

"We're excited to have everything formalized and announced," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall.

"Junior and I had a handshake agreement months ago, and we let other people work out the finer points from there. It was as simple and smooth as it gets.

"My feelings haven't changed since the day he first signed with us. I'm committed as ever to putting him in the best possible situation to be successful and compete for wins and championships."

Earnhardt, 36, has won 18 Sprint Cup races since joining the circuit full-time in 2000. The Kannapolis, N.C., native has won the Daytona 500, the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and two Nationwide Series championships.

In NASCAR's national touring series, Junior has a combined 41 points-paying victories.

"It's great to have it all wrapped up so quickly and far in advance," said Earnhardt, who sits ninth in the Sprint Cup standings entering this weekend's race in Atlanta. "Rick and I were on the same page from the first time we talked about it, so there wasn't any sense in waiting. There were never any questions or hesitations from either of us. It was just: 'Yeah, let’s do it.'

With only three races left to determine the 12 drivers who will compete in the 10-race chase for the 2011 Sprint Cup championship, three Hendrick Motorsports drivers and the man who was replaced at HMS by one of those three hold down nearly half of the top 10 spots in the standings.

With other Hendrick-affiliated drivers in position to make the Chase, the influence of Rick Hendrick's name in racing has been signifcant -- just as it has been to the patrons of the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall.

Kyle Busch, who drove for Hendrick until he was fired and replaced by Dale Earnhardt, Jr., leads the 2011 Sprint Cup points standings by 10 points over Hendrick driver and five-time reigning champion Jimmie Johnson.

Busch got his first Cup victory at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday after holding off Johnson in a green-white-checkered finish in the Pure Michigan 400.

Hendrick driver Jeff Gordon sits sixth in the points standings, just 60 points behind Busch. Earnhardt, Jr., 10th in the standings, trails Busch by 99 points.

Busch beat Johnson to the finish line Sunday by .568 seconds to claim his series-best fourth victory of the season. He kept Johnson winless at Michigan, one of five active tracks on the Cup circuit where Johnson has not been to Victory Lane.

By virtue of the victory, Busch clinched his berth in the 10-race 2011 Chase.

Mark Martin, a fourth Hendrick Motorsports driver, gained two spots to 14th in the standings after Sunday's race. He trails Busch by 172 points.

If Martin sneaks into the top 12, earning one of two wild-card spots, all four Hendrick drivers and Busch could be in the Chase for the first time since Earnhardt, Jr., replaced Busch at Hendrick Motorsports in 2008.

Furthermore, Tony Stewart, who drives for Stewart-Haas Racing in a car powered by a Hendrick engine, also could make the Chase -- which would give Hendrick direct connections to half of the 12-car field. Stewart left Michigan 10th in points.

Hendrick released Busch as a driver apparently because of the young driver's attitude and on-track demeanor rather than a lack of winning. Busch won frequently for Hendrick, and Sunday's victory was the 23rd of his career.

Interestingly, Earnhardt, Jr., has represented Hendrick well, being annually named NASCAR's most popular driver. But he also has been criticized for his lack of winning -- he has not won in 114 races.

Earnhardt, Jr., made the Chase field in 2008 -- the year he replaced Busch -- and finished in the top 10 while Busch finished 12th. But since then, Junior has been unable to finish a season ranked in the top 20 in points.

Should all four Hendrick drivers join Busch in the race for the 2011 Chase beginning in Richmond, Va., it will make for an interesing story.

Busch has raced inspired to prove himself as a champion since Hendrick released him. Earnhardt, Jr., has raced to prove he belongs in the elite position in NASCAR that his late father once held.

The Busch-vs.-Hendrick Motorsports drama also includes a well-publicized manufacturer's duel between Toyota and Chevrolet. Although Chevrolet and Hendrick are two of the greatest names in racing, Busch wants everyone to believe that he can win without them.

Austin Rivers, Nolan Smith Lead Team Hendrick At Greater N.C. Pro-Am

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall got assists from past and future Duke basketball stars to attract a lot of attention Thursday night at N.C. Central University.

former Duke basketball star Nolan Smith - a loyal service customer of the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall - and rising Blue Devil freshman Austin Rivers played for Team Hendrick at the Greater N.C. Pro-Am. The game marked Rivers' Triangle debut on the hardwood.

The arena was packed for Team Hendrick's showdown against a team that featured North Carolina players Dexter Strickland and Leslie McDonald and Duke player Andre Dawkins. Also playing for Team Hendrick were Duke players Ryan Kelly and Seth Curry.

Among those in attendance was David Justice, a newspaper reporter for the Raleigh News and Observer, who wrote this account of the action:

Duke fans will have a lot to love about Rivers after his performance. Duke lost guards Kyrie Irving and Nolan Smith to the NBA this spring, but the heralded incoming freshman showed a packed house and some of his future teammates that he's ready to step right in and help the Blue Devils.

Playing for Team Hendrick with Smith and future teammates Seth Curry and Ryan Kelly, Rivers drew the largest roars of the night on a pair of dunks and afterward drew the largest crowd of autograph seekers, too.

He scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Curry hit five 3-pointers and scored 17, while Smith, the ACC's most outstanding player last year, led the team with 29.

Sheraton Imperial, however, won the game 93-83, behind the scoring of Leslie McDonald (30), Dexter Strickland (24) and Andre Dawkins (16).

"He's a tremendous talent," Kelly said of Rivers. "That's the great thing at Duke. They bring in talent every year. Like every other freshman he's going to have to get used to the defensive part of the game. But with that talent he'll be ready to play from the start."

Irving, who was at the gym but did not play, said before the game, "He's going to help, not doubt. I've seen him in some pickup games, and he's really good."

Rivers, who has been in Durham for a week, has the least to say about himself. But he does like what he sees about this summer league.

"There's some great competition here," Rivers said, while surrounded by fans. "I'm looking to be a creator and scorer, but I know that I have to work on everything. I can always improve."

Team Hendrick is scheduled to play three times next week in the annual pro-am summer league, which runs until Aug. 11. More crowds and exciting moves are expected. Be sure to check one out.

Hendrick Motorsports has the reputation for being the top organization in NASCAR. It has built its success on the same principles that drive the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall.

The thrill of competition -- of being the best -- has proven a tremendous motivator for Rick Hendrick's NASCAR drivers and automotive dealerships. They find a way to win on the track and in the showroom.

Sometimes, such competitiveness can lead to squabbling between teammates -- as evidenced last week at the NASCAR Sprint Cup event in Michigan. It also can lead to better teammates on the track in the future -- and better customer experiences in the dealership.

Hendrick drivers Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., were a little miffed at each other after an on-track incident late in Sunday's race. Martin and Junior claim to have patched things up after a meeting in Earnhardt's trailer later Sunday. But there was a time when the situation was testy between the two.

It happened on lap 192, when Earnhardt hit the wall, forcing a race-altering caution. Earnhardt was on the outside of Martin, who, Junior thought, forced him high on the track and into the wall.

"You can't do nothing about getting run over or getting run into the wall," Earnhardt said.

"I perceived he didn't know I was on the outside. He came up there. He knew I was up there. But he was running hard."

Earnhardt hit the wall, forcing him into a 21st-place finish and extending his winless streak to 108 races. He's still third in the season point standings, 27 behind leader Carl Edwards.

"If the tables were turned," Earnhardt said, "I would have been smarter and given (Martin)more room than he gave me. He is older than me, been racing forever and knows a lot more than I'll ever ... know. Still, I take better care of people than that."

Martin, 52, apologized to Earnhardt after the race.

"I don't have any history of having problems," said Martin, who finished ninth. "I don't think I have one now. I think we will get it sorted out. I feel like I give everybody on the race track respect. I made a mistake."

Another mistake could be thinking that the incident could detract from Hendrick Motorsports' desire to win or emphasis on teamwork. All good teams go through such moments. It is a sign of desire and passion and working hard to be the best.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall Joins Program To Help Motivate High-School Attendance

In an effort to support local high-school seniors and their quest for graduation, the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall joined forces with Chevrolet to design a program intended to help motivate and challenge students to achieve perfect attendance.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, students who have poor attendance for reasons other than illness are more likely to drop out and fall behind their peers in the classroom.

The Chevy Drive for Perfection program was created to give seniors an additional incentive to finish their high-school careers in strong fashion in order to adequately prepare for post-secondary education or the workforce.

As an element to the program, all the seniors who attended a sponsored high school this year who achieved an attendance record of 98 percent or better (as determined by the Board of Education) were eligible to win a new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze.

Literacy and education are two initiatives that Hendrick Durham Auto Mall champions through its support of several initiatives in the Durham area.

Gordon won for the second time this season to achieve multiple victories in a season for the first time since 2007.

"When you see what he’s done in his career, not just this decade, not just in the 2000's, but all the way back to the ’90s, he’s a true legend in this sport," Busch said.

Said Gordon: "A lot of hard work has gone into this."

Scotty McCreery will have the support of the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall when voting begins Tuesday night to determine the next American Idol.

Garner resident McCreery, 17, will compete against 16-year-old Georgia native Lauren Alaina for the 2011 "American Idol" championship in the TV show's first all-country music finale. McCreery and Alaina also are the youngest finalists to compete against each other.

Excitement has been building at the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall since McCreery was named a finalist last week. Dealership personnel will be submitting their votes for McCreery as soon as the online voting begins nationwide.

Both the men's and women's teams play ACC foe Maryland next weekend in the semifinals. The women play Maryland Friday in Stony Brook, N.Y., where they will try to avenge a regular-season loss to the Terrapins.

Reigning champion Maryland, 20-1, has won 30 of its last 31 games and advanced to the national semifinals three years in a row.

Kimel played for Maryland, where she was a two-time All-America and the 1993 Defensive Player of the Year.

Duke's men advanced to their semifinal matchup against Maryland by scoring three times in the fourth quarter against Notre Dame in a rematch of last year's championship game.The Blue Devils will face the Terps on Saturday in Baltimore in a rematch of the 2011 ACC title game won by Maryland.

Virginia also will play in the men's semifinals, giving the ACC three teams in the final four.

The University of North Carolina women's team also is in the final four, having defeated Loyola, 16-13, last weekend in Chapel Hill.

The Duke men are the highest seed left in their tournament. But that may not mean much given that the top four seeds last weekend all lost.

Talladega Offers More Hendrick History

More Hendrick racing history was made last weekend in Talladega.

At the end of 188 laps and 500 miles, Jimmie Johnson won Sunday's Aaron's 499 by inches, tying a record with his razor-thin .002-second margin of victory.

The dramatic finish came two days after Jeff Gordon led a sweep of the top four qualifying positions by Hendrick Motorsports.

Only twice before in Cup racing had an organization swept the top four starting spots for a race.

On the final lap of the race, propelled by a push from teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr., Johnson edged Clint Bowyer in a wild four-wide finish at the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway.

The victory was Johnson's first of the season, his second at Talladega and 54th of his Cup career, tying him with 2011 NASCAR Hall-of-Fame inductee Lee Petty for ninth on the all-time list.

The winning margin tied Ricky Craven's victory over Kurt Busch at Darlington in 2003 for the closest since the introduction of electronic timing and scoring in 1993.

Hendrick Motorsports posted its 11th Talladega victory, tying Richard Childress Racing for most by any team.

Gordon ran third and Earnhardt fourth as Hendrick drivers claimed three of the top four finishing positions.

Johnson said the assist from Earnhardt was so important that he tried to give Earnhardt the checkered flag after the race.

"Well I got it and gave it to him," Johnson said. "He goes: 'I don't want it.' I said: 'Well, I've got to give you something - here. Thanks.'"

Earnhardt said he was happy to provide the assist.

"If I couldn't win the race, I wanted Jimmie to win the race," Earnhardt said, "because I had worked with him all day, and he's my teammate and I'm proud to be driving for Hendrick Motorsports.

"This was a great finish and a great weekend for us to be able to qualify like we did, race like we did, and we have awesome engines, and we build great cars. And we all finished very well, and that's a tribute to the craftsmanship we have back in Charlotte."

Johnson and Earnhardt spent approximately half the race running toward the rear of the field but took their turns up front -- enough for Johnson to lead 14 laps and Earnhardt 11.

To Bowyer, losing by such a small margin was compounded by being edged by a driver who had spent considerable time near the back of the field.

"It's never very good to know you made NASCAR history by losing," Bowyer said. "Sooner or later, I need to start making history by winning. That guy's won enough.

"The only thing that bums me out about that is those guys lagged back all day long. That's what makes it tough, losing to somebody that did that. We were up front for our sponsors and our team, digging all day long. When you get it taken from you at the end by somebody who lagged back all day, it's hard to take."

Gordon, meanwhile, said executing the lag-behind strategy wasn't as easy as it appeared.

"It comes down to a strategy race to try to get yourself in position with 20, 25 (laps) to go," Gordon said. "And there's more to it than you think. I mean, you know, when you see us out there riding around, six, eight seconds back of the lead, it's not as easy as you think it is to manage that and to figure it out.

"You still are having to watch your temperatures and different things. But let's be honest -- in my opinion, Talladega has always been about a 15-, 25-lap race, and the rest is just trying to get to the end. And that's basically what we have now."

Junior Helps Add To Martinsville Success

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – In 1984, Rick Hendrick's new NASCAR race team won at Martinsville Speedway to give Hendrick his first victory as an owner.

The victory was unexpected; Hendrick was not at the race but at church with his family back in North Carolina. The victory also may have kept Hendrick Motorsports in operation.

In the 27 years since, Hendrick Motorsports has developed into one of the most dominant teams in NASCAR history. When Jimmie Johnson won the 2010 points championship, it gave Hendrick 10 championships at NASCAR's highest level.

Last weekend, Hendrick nearly won again in Martinsville, which again was the site for perhaps another memorable Hendrick Motorsports resurgence.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr., one of four full-time Hendrick Sprint Cup drivers, finished second after challenging for the lead in the final laps. It was a good sight for Hendrick and Earnhardt, who has struggled to finish near the front of races as a Hendrick driver.

A handling issue in the closing laps made it difficult for Earnhardt to fend off eventual winner Kevin Harvick. But perhaps Sunday's showing will spark Eanrhardt to more success -- just as the 1984 Martinsville race did for Hendrick Motorsports.

"I'm just happy to be running well," said Earnhardt, who led 17 of the final 30 laps and improved to eighth in the driver standings. "I'm happy to be in the mix.

"I'm thankful for the opportunity I've got, and thankful for all the help I've got with my team. The race team works hard, and when I don't have the speed, they find the speed."

Earnhardt's Hendrick Motorsports teammates rounded out the top 11 - Jeff Gordon finished in fifth-place, Mark Martin 10th and Johnson 11th.

Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet, appeared poised for his seventh victory at the short track after leading 65 laps. But a penalty for entering pit road too fast during a pit stop dropped Johnson from second to trailing the end of the longest line in the field.

Gordon, who led 37 laps in his No. 24 Chevrolet, earned his 24th career top-five finish at the track where he has won five times.

Martin, driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet, overcame a penalty early in the race for changing lanes too soon during the restart. Crew chief Lance McGrew used pit strategy to advance Martin through the field in his 800th career Cup start.

Looking back, the entire team's showing could prove to be another catalyst and have Hendrick once again thankful for the victory in 1984.

"A couple weeks before, we were going to have to shut the team down because we had no sponsor," Hendrick said of the 1984 race. "We went on and won Martinsville and went on and picked up enough help to make it through the year.

"So if we had not won that race 25 years ago, Motorsports probably would not be here today."

Cobalt More Than Holds Own Against Honda

To the "non-believers" who claim that a Chevrolet Cobalt cannot hold its own against a Honda, Marc Holder of the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall says "whatever."

Holder. who works in the Durham dealership's Information Technology Department, competes in a 2010 manual-transmission Cobalt Coupe as a member of the Tarheel Sports Car Club. He finished fifth in a recent Autocross Points Event at the Old Sanford Airport.

Changes Paying Off At HMS

If the Sprint Cup Series season really began last weekend at Phoenix International Raceway as so many seem to believe, Rick Hendrick already has the competition squirming.

Much of the talk a week earlier prior to the Daytona 500 -- the official season opener on the Cup schedule but a race so unique, especially this season, that last Sunday's Subway Fresh Fit 500 at PIR felt more like a "regular" race -- centered around everyone else. Kurt Busch won the Shootout and one of the two 150-mile Duel qualifying races in the No. 22 Dodge he drives for Penske Racing. Jeff Burton won the other Duel in the No. 31 Chevrolet he drives for Richard Childress Racing.

Sure, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the pole in the No. 88 Chevy he wheels for the venerable Mr. Hendrick, but then he promptly wrecked it during the next practice and had to go to the back of the field for the start of the subsequent race.

Meanwhile, the Fords of Roush Fenway Racing were the talk of the Daytona garage because of their high-performing, low-cooling new engines. The Hendrick Motorsports cars, including those of five-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson, four-time champion Jeff Gordon and accomplished veteran Mark Martin, flew largely unnoticed under the Daytona radar.

No one was really saying it. But plenty thought it.

Could it be all that internal shuffling of the four Hendrick teams at the end of last season was a little too much? Could this be the year Hendrick Motorsports finally proved human and therefore truly vulnerable?

Um, those questions appear to have been answered in Phoenix, where Gordon broke a 66-race winless streak to lead a parade of Hendrick cars in a relentless march toward the front. Not only did Gordon win in only his second race with new crew chief Alan Gustafson, but all four Hendrick cars finished in the top 13 -- including Johnson in third, Earnhardt Jr. in 10th and Martin in 13th, respectively.

Vindication?

The ink wasn't dry on Johnson's $5.778 million check for winning a fifth consecutive championship before Hendrick was tinkering with his teams. Sure, he left well enough alone on Johnson's No. 48 team -- although he and crew chief Chad Knaus did agree on making a pit-crew swap with the No. 24 team that was made in the middle of a race toward the end of the season permanent. Those who know Knaus know that changes always can and will be made to that group, depending on how they're performing.

For the other three Hendrick teams, the changes made immediately after Johnson's triumphant return from the postseason awards banquet in Las Vegas were less subtle than merely swapping out a tire changer or two. Gordon's long-time crew chief, Steve Letarte, became Earnhardt's crew chief; Alan Gustafson, who had been with Martin, became Gordon's new pit boss; and Lance McGrew, who had been with Earnhardt, went to Martin.

Furthermore, after years of working in the same building together with the No. 48 guys, Gordon's No. 24 team swapped shops within the sprawling Hendrick complex with Earnhardt's No. 88 crew. The sweeping changes were bold and somewhat unexpected, at least in their wide scope. And Hendrick knew it would open himself and his organization to great scrutiny.

So far, they are more than holding up to that close inspection.

"You know, when you make a decision like that, it's up to the people to make it work," Hendrick told the media after Gordon's immensely popular win Sunday at PIR. "But this organization is really one team of four cars. People say that sometimes and don't really mean it -- but these guys work shoulder to shoulder. I think the chemistry of it and when you look at the DNA of all of them, it made sense.

"Dale needed Steve because (Letarte) is a real rah-rah guy that stays with him all during the race. I looked at Lance as a technician and that's what Mark is, and they have won together (in the Nationwide Series). And then as for Alan and Jeff, Jeff has always had tremendous respect for Alan and has always talked about having Alan."

Long way to go

Maybe so, but Gordon also held Letarte in high regard and still does. They are close friends. He left no doubt at any point that the crew chief swaps were an execution of Hendrick's vision, not his. But he also readily admitted that he always has been intrigued by the thought of possibly working with Gustafson.

"It all happened pretty quick," Gordon said. "And I've always admired Alan, always respected him."

It was fitting that Gordon had to make a late-race pass of Kyle Busch to win at Phoenix. It was when Gustafson was serving as Kyle's crew chief at Hendrick that Gordon first started gaining serious respect for what Gustafson could do.

"I remember having conversations with Alan about things that they were doing and I liked the way he talked about things," Gordon said. "I liked the ideas that he had and the things that they were doing.

"And I liked him even more, because this is a young Kyle Busch we're talking about. That's what we always said around Hendrick Motorsports: that's a young Kyle Busch. Young Kyle Busch was a handful. I could remember every weekend, they would be fast and he would hit the wall and they would spend most of their time fixing the car in practice. To see Alan go through that, knowing they are building fast race cars, but to be able to handle himself the way he handled those situations with a young Kyle Busch, was impressive."

Busch was the odd man out at Hendrick when Earnhardt came on board as a driver in 2008 and headed over to Joe Gibbs Racing while Gustafson stayed behind to work with Martin. It has not been lost on anyone that Gustafson won four races in three seasons with the young Busch, won five races with the elder statesman Martin in 2009 -- and now he's off to a rousing start with Gordon.

So he's won with the young and the old, and now with the perfectly in-between. Gordon, at 39, is 13 years older than Busch and 13 years younger than the 52-year-old Martin.

"It's him," Gordon insisted of Gustafson.

Gustafson shrugged off the idea of that.

"To me, to say you've won with Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin, I think you're pretty lucky," Gustafson said. "You know what I mean? If I would have won with somebody who has never won, I think that's probably a bigger accomplishment.

"I thank Mr. Hendrick for putting me in position to work with drivers of that caliber. There are a lot of people who are going to work their whole lives and never have opportunities like that. I think it's awesome that I've got those chances and to work with Kyle and Mark and now Jeff. They are three Hall of Fame drivers, arguably three of the best ever to drive these cars, and I'm just ecstatic that I've had those opportunities."

Meanwhile, it has left Hendrick smiling at the thought of a hungrier, reinvigorated Gordon challenging Johnson for his own fifth championship while the rest of his HMS gang scrambles to make certain they aren't left far behind. He also knows one race does not make a season.

That's a warning to the rest of the garage. It means he won't allow himself or anyone within the Hendrick organization to remain complacent.

"It's early," Hendrick told the assembled media at PIR. "By summer, you might be telling me I made a terrible mistake."

Perhaps, but it's doubtful.

Durham Auto Mall Salutes The Unlikely

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall sends congratulations to the Duke University men's basketball team for regaining the nation's No. 1 ranking.

The Blue Devils (25-2) jumped from fifth to No. 1 on Monday after a week that saw the top four teams in the top-25 poll all lose. The move to the top is the biggest since Kansas went from sixth to No. 1 in 2003, the last time the top four all lost in the same week.

Another unlikely jump to the top this weekend was that of rookie Sprint Cup driver Trevor Bayne -- who claimed victory in the Daytona 500 in his first start in The Great American Race.

Bayne beat pole-sitter Dale Earnhardt, Jr., as well as all three of Junior's Hendrick Motorsports teammates -- five-time champion Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin. He finished first among 43 total drivers at the ripe young age of 20, a driver so unknown that he was not even listed in the Vegas odds.

Earnhardt Loses Daytona Pole After Wreck

Daytona 500 pole winner Dale Earnhardt Jr., who races for Hendrick Motorsports, will have to start from the back row instead of the front for Sunday's race because of an accident in practice.

Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon will stay on the front row and start from the No. 2 position. The winner of the first of two qualifying races today will start from the pole position formerly occupied by Junior.

Junior and Martin Truex, Jr., were forced to unload backup cars after an accident in the opening moments of Wednesday's first practice for the Gatorade Duel qualifying races. Neither driver will have practiced in the cars before they start their Duels.

Per NASCAR's rules, Junior will retain credit for his pole position and will line up there for the first Duel on Thursday and again for Sunday's Daytona 500 before dropping to the rear of each race's field on the pace laps.

February Means Fast Hendrick Drivers In Daytona, Excellent Hendrick Deals In Durham

The dealership will provide baseball equipment, instructional clinics, a monetary donation and an opportunity to raise an additional $10,000 in funds through a Chevrolet vehicle-giveaway fundraiser.

The effort by Hendrick Durham Auto Mall is part of the Chevy Youth Baseball initiative being rolled out across the nation from March through July 2011.

Hendrick, Johnson Celebrate 5th Straight Sprint Cup Championship

If it is the Monday before Thanksgiving, then Jimmie Johnson must be hoisting a championship trophy.

Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet owned by Rick Hendrick, claimed his fifth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Johnson finished second to Carl Edwards in the season-ending Ford 400 at Homestead-to secure the first come-from-behind title in his historic winning streak.

Johnson trailed Toyota driver Denny Hamlin by 15 points entering the final race of the 36-race season and the 10-race Chase for the Cup.

The race for the championship was not the high drama fans had anticipated from the closest Chase since the introduction of NASCAR's playoff format in 2004.

An early spin by Hamlin proved decisive. A pit-road speeding penalty knocked Kevin Harvick -- who entered the race third in the points standings -- to the rear of the field just when he appeared ready to contend for the victory.

Sloppy work in the pits on the part of Johnson's substitute crew -- borrowed from Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon's No. 24 team in the middle of the eighth Chase race (at Texas) and bound to Johnson thereafter -- repeatedly cost the champion track position.

To call the final race a comedy of errors on the part of the title contenders may be harsh. But championship owner Rick Hendrick, who also owns the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, did precisely that.

"It was like: 'Who's going to screw up the most?'" Hendrick said after claiming his 10th Cup title (five with Johnson, four with Gordon and one with Terry Labonte).

Johnson finished 39 points ahead of Hamlin and 41 ahead of Harvick.

"I'm just beside myself," Johnson said in Victory Lane. "Four was amazing. Now I have to figure out what the hell to say about winning five of these things, because everybody is going to want to know what it means. I don't know. It is pretty damn awesome -- I can tell you that."

Representatives of the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall will participate in the annual Halloween Bike Ride to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Durham.

The dealership is a corporate sponsor of the annual fund-raiser.

The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. It will feature three routes of 31, 62 and 100 miles.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Durham. Riders will be helping to build homes, hope and community as they experience scenic views of Durham County on their bicycles.

Pre-registration for the event is closed. Interested participants can register on-site beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday for $45.

The ride will be fully supported, with the Durham County Sheriff's Office providing rest stops.

There will be a post-ride paty at the finish line, featuring live music by local five-piece rock band Sea Cow.

Just days after honoring the work of the Durham Firebirds by presenting the local youth football league with a check, the dealership is involved with several fundraisers, community events and heavy month-end sales discounts.

Helping to build and support its growing customer base, the Roxboro Street General Motors dealership will host a "Cadillac Open House" on Wednesday, a "Chevrolet Deer Camp Day" on Friday in Hillsborough and an N.C. Central University Homecoming event Saturday on campus.

October has been a busy month for the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall -- and not only for automotive sales, parts and service.

The dealerships's involvement in local community affairs and causes has been great and steady, from promoting the fight against breast cancer and domestic violence, to physical fitness, to youth athletics and sponsoring fundraisers.

In addition to superior prices, inventory and customer satisfaction, Hendrick Durham Auto Mall stays at the forefront of commununity service and involvement.

Without the patronage of the communities it serves, the dealership would not be successful. So it strives to give back to its constituents at evey opportunity and contribute to the causes its constituents support.

Just today, several members of the dealership participated in a 5K run-walk on the American Tobacco Trail to help raise money for a local charity. For at least two of the runners, it was the second fund-raising road race in which they had competed in the last two weeks -- one of them to help out victims of domestic violence.

The month began with the dealership's inaugural PINK Drive, during which the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall contributed money for each test drive to the fight against breast cancer and hosted guest speakers and survivors.

NASCAR Names Hall Of Fame Class Of 2011

The NASCAR Hall of Fame's Class of 2011 is perhaps more significant for who is missing from it than for who is in it.

Missing from the group of five inductees are three-time champions Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough, who many expected to be "locks" for induction.

Also excluded is Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick, who owns the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall. Hendrick was on the list of Hall nominees for the second straight year.

NASCAR has been a sport of popularity versus performance. The Hall-of-Fame class of 2011 reflects that.

David Pearson, the only true "lock" of the group, was the leading vote-getter. He was joined by Bobby Allison, Lee Petty, Ned Jarrett and Bud Moore.

Pearson can relate to the surprising exclusion of Waltrip and Yarborough. He was left out of last year's inaugural class, losing out to former NASCAR chairman Bill France, Jr., by one vote.

Named this year to all but three of the 53 ballots, Pearson -- the "Silver Fox" who won 105 races in his career -- received a standing ovation from the crowd attending the announcement in the Great Hall of the Hall of Fame in Charlotte.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame Voting Panel, consisting of members of the Nominating Committee along with 31 others representing all facets of the NASCAR industry, met in a closed session to vote on the induction class of 2011. The class was determined by 53 votes cast by the panel and a nationwide fan vote.

The Class of 2011 will be officially inducted in a ceremony in May.

Hendrick, The founder and owner of Hendrick Motorsports, recently celebrated his 25th anniversary as a team owner. His organization is recognized as one of NASCAR's most successful, having won nine Sprint Cup championships.

Hendrick owned a championship drag-racing boat team before founding "All-Star Racing," the team that became Hendrick Motorsports, in 1984.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall Makes Imporession At Hendrick Marrow Half-Marathon

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall was well represented at the recent Hendrick Marrow Foundation half marathon in Concord, N.C.

Furthermore, dealership personnel put on an impressive display of fitness in completing the 13.1-mile course that included a lap on the Charlotte Motor Speedway asphalt.

Another section of the course covered the Z-Max Dragstrip that sits right next door to the speedway. Proceeds from the race went to the Hendrick Marrow Foundation's continued fight against cancer.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall service technician Tyler Wilkerson finished the race in less than two hours -- coming across the line in 1:51. Just two minutes behind him was fellow service tech Frankie Bowling.

Jack Morgan, Hendrick Durham Auto Mall service manager, nearly eclipsed the two-hour mark with his time of 2:02. Sales Consultant Paul Ensslin was right behind Morgan, finishing in 2:06.53.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall sales consultant Mike Price competed in a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race that ran at the same time as the half-marathon and also included a lap on the speedway track. Parrticipating in his first road race at age 56, Price completed the course in 38 minutes.

Not to be outdone, Hendrick Durham Auto Mall sales consultant Elizabeth Rogers completed the half-marathon on little sleep at the end of a busy weekend schedule. Rogers had worked for the dealership at a promotional event in Durham until 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, then drove to Ccncord in the wee hours of morning and caught a tiny bit of shuteye in her car in the Speedway parking lot before getting up and running the race.

Rogers finished in less than three-and-a-half hours and received a rousing ovation as she crossed the finish line.

A great time was had by all the participants, and the money generated from the event went to a worthy cause.

In the end, the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall gave testament that great fitness -- even in "always-on-the-clock" business of car sales and service -- can be as valuable and benefirical as providing excellent customer service and great deals.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall participated in a demonstration for Safe Kids on Wednesday at the Museum of Life and Science. The "Booster Blitz" showed the danger of leaving children and to highlight the importance of seat belts and the proper use of car seats.

According to the Education Board of North Carolina, high-school students who have logged an attendance record of 98 percent or better during the 2010-11 school year will learn that the payoff could be extra special.

Chevrolet will hand over the keys to a brand-new Cruze as a reward.

High-school seniors at more than 47 schools in 20 North Carolina counties will become eligible for a chance to win a Chevy Cruze after completing 180 days of 98-percent or better attendance at their respective schools.

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall will particpate in the program to promote perfect attendance. The dealership will partner with Riverside and Hillside High Schools.

Students who qualify with 98-percent attendance for the first 180 days of the school year will be invited to attend the end of the year event. Date and location will be released once the venue has been secured.

In its first year in North Carolina, the "Drive for Perfection" is an initiative presented by Chevrolet and joined by the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall in conjunction with the Local School Boards.

The program was created to give seniors an additional incentive to finish their high-school careers strong in order to adequately prepare for post-secondary education or the workforce.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, students who have poor attendance for reasons other than illness are more likely to drop out and to fall behind their peers in the classroom.

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall participated in a demonstration last week that illustrated the danger of leaving people (especially children) and animals inside a parked car in a parking lot -- even if just for an intended short period of time.

On an overcast morning, a thermometer was placed inside a parked 2010 Buick Lacrosse that has an interior designed and built for comfort. The car had not been running. The inside temperature was 97 degrees.

The demonstration was performed during an event that focused on kids' safetty. There also was a simulator in which people could ride and experience an impact at 25 miles per hour -- as well as the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

All too frequently, it seems, people drive without wearing seatbelts and leave children and/or pets inside their vehicle when they stop and park for a "short" errand. The results can be tragic.

Pettersson Victory

Former N.C. State golfer Carl Pettersson, who purchases his vehicles from the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, rallied to win the Canadian Open on Sunday for his fourth PGA Tour victory.

Pettersson closed with a 3-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Dean Wilson. He had trailed Wilson by four strokes with seven holes to play.

For the victory, Petterson earned $918,000.

Long Ball Players Try Out For Kansas City Royals

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall was pleased to provide transportation for members of the city's Long Ball Program -- a youth baseball league for players age 13-18 -- to a Kansas City Royals tryout camp in Burlington on Monday

The players worked out at Burlington Athletic Stadium under the studious eye of Royals scout Casey Fahy. The players were timed in the 60-yard dash, took batting practice and fielded fly balls and grounders while Fahy took notes to take back to the Kansas City front office.

The Long Ball Program is a pilot program run by Pat Nobles with support from Minor League Baseball. Games are played in Durham Athletic Park, where the movie "Bull Durham" was filmed.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall owner Rick Hendrick and his Hendrick Motorsports racing operation will be very much in the public eye this month, annually one of the busiest and most exciting months in NASCAR.

As successful as Hendrick's Durham dealership has been in recent years -- able to expand its product line, raise its Customer Satisfaction Index and gain loyal customers by the bunches - Hendrick made his name in the racing business. That is why he was an integral part of today's opening of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte.

Also, to show appreciation to the fans who have supported Hendrick Motorsports and its drivers, the team will host a one-hour "tweetup" this month at its shop and museum in Concord.

Hendrick participated in today's grand opening of the 150,000 square-foot NASCAR Hall of Fame. Named honorary chairman of the Hall, he received a standing ovation as he was introduced at the grand-opening ceremonies.

During the third inning, the entire Duke team will take the field, giving fans in the Triangle the opportunity to congratulate the Devils. The NCAA championship trophy will then be placed on the main concourse, where fans will have an opportunity to take their picture with it.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall was among 25 Chevrolet dealers from the Raleigh-area that partnered with local youth basketball leagues helping to raise close to $11,800 in total donations from the dealerships and private parties in the area.

During the 2009-2010 basketball season, MP Sports received monetary and equipment donations, as well as the opportunity to raise up to $10,000 through a unique fundraiser.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall partnered with MP Sports -- run by Michael Patterson of the Durham Parks and Recreation Department -- because of the league's proximity to the dealership.

Over the course of the season, Hendrick Durham Auto Mall donated team equipment kits, which included equipment bags, practice pinnies, coaches' clipboards, scorebooks and t-thirts. The dealership also made a cash donation to MP Sports.

Offering additional support, the dealership donated a vehicle, which was given away through the Chevy Youth Basketball Fundraiser Opportunity.

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall has announced that it will be investing support in Durham through a partnership with the local Durham Parks and Recreation/MP Sports baseball league.

Hendrick Durham Auto Mall will provide baseball equipment, instructional clinics, a monetary donation and an opportunity to raise an additional $10,000 through a Chevrolet vehicle giveaway and fundraiser.

The effort by Hendrick Durham Auto Mall is part of the Chevy Youth Baseball initiative sweeping the nation from March through July 2010.

Last weekend, the dealership was a sponsor of the 11th annual Spring Golf Classic at Hillandale. Presented by Calvary Ministries of the WestEnd Community, the event was held to support the work of the Community Family Life and Recreation Center at Lyon's Park.

If you think sales consultants at the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall are exaggerating how well business is going -- are just making up statements about how difficult it is to keep certain vehicles in inventory just to develop a sense of urgency in potential buyers -- well, you have thought wrong.

General Motors, which builds the vehicles that are sold at the Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, has seen sales rise nearly 12 percent nationally in the past month partly due to new and improved products like the Chevrolet Equinox and Cadillac SRX.

Chevrolet car sales to individuals reportedly rose 10 percent in February and are expected to continue to rise in the spring.

Furthermore, GM's sales of its Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands reportedly climbed 32 percent nationwide.

Those numbers came in spite of sagging sales in the Northeast region last month because of winter storms that kept potential consumers inside their homes. Dealers in the region had to dig through several feet of snow for weeks just to uncover their lot inventory.

The Hendrick Durham Auto Mall has had a few days of slow traffic this year due to inclement weather. Nevertheless, the dealership has managed to sustain sales momentum due to its strong business practices, great pricing, great product line and professional staff.

Much of the dealership's sales success can be attributed to the demand for the Equinox, SRX and the GMC Terrain -- vehicles that are the size of SUVs but built on car frames for better fuel economy. It has been hard to keep those vehicles in stock in Durham, with many of them arriving at the dealership as already-sold units.

Nationally, sales of the Equinox have jumped 133 percent this year. Sales of the SRX reportedly have quadrupled.

That's the case with a lot of the inventory at Durham's No. 1 dealership. There is a sense of urgency to buy what's available.
